The Korça Court has set the security measure of "prison arrest" for Kristjan Sterjon, suspected of the murder of 20-year-old Joan Zyko, a serious event that shocked the city of Korça on August 8.
The hearing for the determination of the security measure took place this Wednesday under strict security conditions. Prosecutor Artenida Toska requested the measure of "prison arrest" for Sterjo, a request that was accepted by the Korça Court.
Numerous police forces were deployed in the premises surrounding the court, while the institution was surrounded due to the high sensitivity of the case. No family members were present at the hearing, neither from the family of the victim Joan Zyko nor from the family of the suspected perpetrator.
Joan Zyko, 20 years old, was shot on the afternoon of August 8 in neighborhood no. 14 of Korça. According to data made public by the investigation, there had been a previous conflict between Zyko and Kristjan Sterjo.
In his testimony to investigators, Sterjo gave his version of the incident, stating that the conflict had started about two weeks ago. According to him, on the day of the incident, there was initially a physical confrontation between the two young men, after which he left and went to the apartment.
Sterjo stated that he then retrieved a firearm that he had hidden and returned to the area where Zyko was. According to his testimony, he followed the 20-year-old and fired a gun at him.
After the incident, Sterjo left the crime scene and remained on the run for several hours. The Korça Police managed to locate and arrest him around midnight on August 9, near the Mitropolia area. During the investigative actions, material evidence was administered and items suspected of being related to the incident were seized.
Sterjo is being investigated for the criminal offenses of "Premeditated Murder" and "Unauthorized Possession and Production of Weapons, Explosive Weapons and Ammunition."
With today's decision by the Korça Court, Kristjan Sterjo will remain in custody while the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, investigations to fully uncover the circumstances and motive of the murder continue.
