Alban Gropçaj

An open case file for the murder of 28-year-old Alban Gropçaj, an Albanian worker living in Vicoforte, Italy, who was the victim of a shooting three years ago in Caucaia, Brazil, at the Cuneost Public Prosecutor's Office.

This news comes after the sensational turn that led to the indictment against Guido Bertola, an artisan entrepreneur from Mondovi, by the Brazilian authorities a few weeks ago, as the suspected instigator of the crime.

During the late evening hours of February 18, 2019, Gropcaj and Bertola, his employer, were together in the town located twelve kilometers away from Fortaleza. They had just come out of an Italian restaurant when two motorcycle criminals approached him, shooting him with three bullets, two in the head and one in the shoulder.

Until now, it was believed that the tragedy was the result of a robbery that ended badly. This is the version that Bertola has always given before investigators, explaining that the victim was killed while fighting with the perpetrators.

Ceara's prosecutor, however, believes it was a scene created by the entrepreneur himself, driven by unspecified financial interests. The dinner itself would be merely a pretext to seduce the young worker on the street and kill him. Various circumstances had contributed to the conclusion of prosecutor Jairo Pequeno Neto, after three years of investigation:

"Nothing was taken in the accident, which would rule out a robbery. The investigation also showed that the car driven by the Italian was parked, in a straight line, behind closed doors, near the sidewalk and at the time of arrival of the killers, no braking was heard. Therefore, it seems that the Italian has parked the vehicle waiting for the criminals ".

According to the investigation, the victim had no enemies in Italy, much less in Brazil, as he had only been in the Caucasus for four days. "Witnesses also said that overnight robberies in the neighborhood are not common." Bertola, however, is not the only suspect. A Brazilian, believed to be one of the two perpetrators of the crime, was arrested (the other killer, reportedly, later died in a gunfight).

Authorities also believe that another person is involved in the criminal scheme: he is a trader of Brazilian nationality, residing in Frabosa Sottana. The woman, according to investigative hypotheses, would be the next mastermind of the murder. It may be this hypothesis that has prompted the Cuneo prosecutor to open investigations in Italy, even if it is not currently known if there are persons registered in the register of suspects.
