An address error and an invisible leak of carbon monoxide (poisonous gas) led to the grave tragedy that shook the community of Porcari, near Lucca in Italy. Four members of the Albanian Kola family were found dead in their apartment, after being poisoned by gas that leaked from the home's boiler.

The Kola Family
It was almost 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening when a desperate call came into Tuscany's 112 emergency center. "My sister is sick, we don't know what's wrong," said 22-year-old Hajdar Kola, Italian media reported.

Wrong house number

According to local media reports, the Kola family's home was located in Rughi, an area of the Porcari municipality.

In her room was her 15-year-old sister, Jessica, sitting on the bed and unconscious. Her parents, Arti and Jonida, 48 and 43 years old, were also with her.

During the call, the situation deteriorated dramatically. The operator first heard the parents fainting, and then Hajdari himself fell to the ground. Before the phone went off, he managed to give the address: Galgani Street, number 168. But it was a wrong number.

According to the investigation, the young man, under the effects of carbon monoxide, had mixed up the last two digits. The correct number was 186.

Ambulance two hours late

The ambulance arrived very quickly, but for a long time it was unable to find the apartment. The team checked the surrounding houses, sought further clarification from 112 and even tried to locate the phone call, without success. The carabinieri were also involved, who managed to identify the family through the mobile phone number.

Only at around 9:45 PM, almost two hours after the first call, did law enforcement enter the apartment along with the family's uncle and two neighbors.

Police and emergency services found him dead.

The scene was dramatic. On the first floor, the table was set for dinner. On the second floor, in Jessica's room, the bodies of family members were found.

Immediately after the discovery, some of the rescuers and people who entered the apartment began to feel unwell, with dizziness and difficulty breathing, and were taken to hospital. The uncle, Durim Kola, was in the most serious condition, and spent the night in hospital.

"I tried, but I couldn't save them," he said through tears after returning home, where dozens of friends had gathered to mourn. The children's grandmother also suffered a serious health condition upon receiving the news.

Family in Italy for 5 years

The Kola family had been living in Italy for about five years. After a period of work in Greece, the head of the family had found work in Tuscany and had reunited with the family in the paper industry area of Lucchesia, where a large Albanian community lives. Arti worked as a painter, while Hajdari was an electrical technician. Jessica was a third-grade student at lower secondary school. The family had only moved into the new house on Galgani Street, which they had recently purchased, five months earlier. The reconstruction work had not yet been completed.

INVESTIGATIONS

The Lucca prosecutor's office has seized the apartment and launched an investigation. Firefighters are investigating whether the defect is related to the boiler installation, maintenance or exhaust system, and whether the installation was carried out by the family themselves or by external technicians.

Black in the community

The entire municipality of Porcari has been shaken by the event. The mayor, Leonardo Fornaciari, called it “a deep wound for the entire community,” recalling a similar tragedy that occurred in 1992. There was also great pain at the school where Jessica studied. The director of the Camogliano institute described her as “a girl full of life and intellectual energy.” Classmates have begun collecting her writings; among them, poems about freedom and peace have been found.
