A case of illegal waste trafficking towards Albania has been discovered by Italian authorities.

An Italian company was attempting to illegally transport over 16 tons of "urban" waste to Albania with a truck that was loaded in the Ancona area.

The truck would be loaded onto a floating vehicle and would have Durrës as its final destination.

Inspectors, after finding discrepancies in the documents, physically verified the transported goods and found obvious discrepancies in relation to what was reported in the customs declaration.

The goods were analyzed by experts from the Regional Environmental Protection Agency (Arpam) who classified the products as municipal waste, which falls into a list that has three subcategories, meaning they may pose a potential environmental risk and require greater control, and may be hazardous or non-hazardous.

The reclassification of the goods meant that the shipment had to be accompanied by a preventive recovery procedure and prior express authorization from the receiving country, which could not be issued in this case, as Albania prohibits the import of this type of product.

The intervention of Fiamme Gialle and the Customs Agency ended with the seizure of 16 tons of textile waste worth several thousand euros, which, according to investigators, was attempted to be illegally transported to a country outside the EU.

The legal representative of the exporting company is being investigated in the state for the crimes of illegal waste trafficking and "fraud committed by a private individual in a public act."
