Although the government had warned that TikTok would be shut down for a year, the app is back in use in Albania, just 3 months after its blocking.

As of this morning, users across the country have had full access to the platform, without being forced to use a VPN.

This sudden comeback comes in stark contrast to previous statements by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who a year ago described TikTok as "very toxic, especially for children", adding that "95% of parents in Albania are terrified".

There is no reaction from the government yet to this change in the situation. It is also not known whether TikTok has met the requirements to make the platform safer for Albanian users, or if it has simply reopened without any new intervention or guarantees.

The situation remains even more unclear after a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court, which accepted the review of the request of the Albanian Journalists Association against the government's decision to close TikTok, but overturned the immediate suspension of the measure. This means that the ban should have continued, at least until the consultations are completed.

Rama described TikTok as "the neighborhood street urchin who is on the phone," and declared in strong tones: "TikTok will not exist in the Republic of Albania for a year. You won't see street urchins, perverts, scum, and dogs on China's TikTok."

But today's facts show the opposite: the "neighborhood streetwalker," as Rama called him, is back and among us again. TikTok is open and active in Albania — while institutions remain silent.
