An Albanian convicted in Italy for drug trafficking has argued in a UK court that he should not be deported to Italy, as this would jeopardize the chances of his two sons becoming professional footballers.

Elis Lila , 40, was sentenced in Italy to 11 years in prison for involvement in a criminal group that dealt with drug trafficking.

He left Italy illegally, first crossing into Albania and then into the United Kingdom, where he has lived since 2016 with his wife and children.

In an attempt to avoid extradition, Lila presented the argument in court that his return to Italy would violate the right to a family life, guaranteed by Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

He stated that his two sons are part of a football club and have "real chances" of becoming professionals, while the eldest son is close to receiving a scholarship from a Premier League club.

According to his lawyers, the moral support and presence of his father are essential for their sporting development.

The British court rejected his claims, arguing that Lila was aware of his involvement in criminal activity and the investigations against him when he left Italy, and therefore could not claim legal protection in these circumstances./ DailyMail
