The US Embassy in Tirana has excerpted a part of Ambassador Yuri Kim's speech in celebration of the 246th anniversary of the Independence of the United States and the 100th anniversary of relations between the US and Albania.
Kim said that for the 100th anniversary of US-Albania relations this year and the 30th anniversary of the end of communism, let us remind each other of the solemn role and responsibility that all of us here have to cherish, preserve, protect, strengthened, and shared democracy - the democracy for which each of our peoples, Americans and Albanians, have fought so hard.
Yesterday afternoon, a reception was organized at the American embassy in Tirana on the occasion of the 246th anniversary of the Independence of the United States and 100 years of friendship between the United States and Albania.
This reception was attended by the most distinguished personalities of the country, the head of state Ilir Meta, the elected President Bajram Begaj, politicians from the majority and the Democratic Party, the former leader of the DP, Lulzim Basha, the head of the parliamentary group of the DP, Enkelejd Alibeaj and ministers of the government cabinet.
Yuri Kim's words:
Mr. President, thank you for your kind words on behalf of the Albanian people.
Madam Speaker, Excellencies and distinguished guests, friends – it is a distinct privilege for me to welcome you to this historic meeting to celebrate the 246th anniversary of the Independence of the United States and 100 years of friendship between the United States and Albania.
Our centenary and our 246th birthday are a time to celebrate, as together we have achieved so much. But they are also a time to reflect and express recommitment to each other and to our aspirations as a democracy.
The United States and Albania share many things, but one thing we have in common is hope. Hope in our struggle for independence and sovereignty and our relentless effort to build democracy. Americans and Albanians have endured the yoke of oppression - as subjects of colonies or empires, and Albanians, again, as victims of dictatorship. And both sides have sought and won freedom.
The Constitution of the United States begins with the words: "We, the People of the United States, for the purpose of forming a more perfect union..."
And in closing, I would like to pass the baton to those who are truly living history in action, representing the future of US-Albania relations. Let me invite Tea Aliaj, who leads the US Embassy's Nature Ambassadors Club, and Artens Lazaj, the president of the US Embassy's Youth Council, to speak.
…
Thank you Tea and Artens for these inspiring words!
And now, Mr. President and guests, please join me in raising a glass to the 246th birthday of the United States of America, to 100 years of long-lasting American-Albanian friendship, and – most importantly – to the future! Cheers! Another hundred!
