The toxic waste scandal, investigations may extend to Kosovo
Port of Durrës

The investigations to find out how 800 tons of toxic waste were transported from the port of Durrës to Thailand and where these wastes were taken from can also be extended to Kosovo.

The Durres Prosecutor's Office started the investigative process a day ago on the basis of two referrals, one from the General Directorate of Customs, dated August 16, and one from the police, for smuggling prohibited or restricted goods and abuse of office.

Part of the remains is suspected to have been taken in Albania and part in Kosovo. Their exporting company is Sokolaj LLC, which has not yet responded to TV Klan's interest in clarifying what kind of waste it is and where it got it.

Various media suspected that part of the waste is from the Kurum company, but this company clarified that it does not deal with the export of waste from the metal processing process it carries out.

"Kurum International has never exported hazardous waste, so even in this case this shipment in question was not exported by Kurum International. This fact is easily verifiable by the relevant institutions, the General Directorate of Customs and Albanian ports", said Kurum.

Tv Klan learns that various companies buy near Kurum waste such as slag and other waste from metal processing, which they use in industry as processing raw material, recycle or export.

Until now, it is not clear if the cargo in question contains such materials purchased by Kurum, but the Turkish company operating in Albania excludes the possibility that its waste is dangerous.

Even for the part of the load of 800 tons that is suspected to come from Kosovo, the exact content or exact origin is not known.

The authorities suspect that a part of them comes from the Trepca mine, but further investigations are expected to clarify what exactly it is about.

The collecting and exporting company, Sokolaj SHPK, based in Durrës, explains on its website that it deals with the collection, transportation, storage and export for further recycling of a different range of mineral products, waste, dust, ash and waste products.

It says it has handled and exported thousands of tons of these products.

The issue is expected to be fully clarified with the arrival of the cargo in Albania, as only in this way will the content of these materials, their origin and their dangerousness be revealed.

The containers are being returned with the two shipping companies, MAERSK and MSC, in cooperation with the Thai authorities. They are expected to arrive first in Italy, in Goia Tauro at the end of September.

The authorities in Singapore clarified that they acted after receiving information that the cargo from Albania contained undeclared hazardous waste.

The Ministry of Environment in Albania denied having given authorization for this transport and said that it is also investigating the matter./Tv Klan
