Population and Housing Census 2023

The 2023 Population and Housing Census that started today in the entire territory of the country is the 12th Census, since Albania was declared an independent state in 1912, where the first Census was carried out in 1923.

Since the 1989 Census, its methodology has increasingly followed international recommendations for conducting the Census. It aims to be in full compliance with the recommendations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

" So far, referring to the system, the process is going well. Most of the respondents have registered. 1500 interviews are in process, about 800 questionnaires have been completed. The process is dynamic and is going according to expectations, the interviews will continue in the afternoon to enable the meeting with the citizens who have been at work.

INSTAT will provide information on the progress. We invite every individual to devote a few minutes to the counting process by cooperating with the pollsters, as the census is a public good for the good of every citizen", said the director of INSTAT, Elsa Dhuli.

The Census of Population and Housing provides data on the official population count in a country, in the smallest geographical unit, together with information on a selected number of demographic, social and economic characteristics of the population.

Similarly, the Census of Housing provides the official count of all dwellings in the country in the smallest geographic unit, along with information on a selected number of housing characteristics.

Field work will last six weeks. The information collected by Censi helps the government decide how to distribute funds and aid to counties and municipalities. Local authorities will use this information to determine where to build, from schools, homes and hospitals to roads and water networks.

All adults living in the territory of the Republic of Albania are obliged to provide the information requested in the Census questionnaires in a complete, accurate and reliable manner. Non-participation is against the law and is punishable by a fine, from 50,000 Lek to 100,000 new Lek .
