Albania has officially applied to join the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. The request was submitted today to the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenercic by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
During the joint press conference, Rama said that membership is a very significant step and a great relief for our country, for its needs, while adding that the cases that this EU civil assistance mechanism has given are significant. Albania, like the earthquake and the pandemic.
"The reform of the civil protection system is in the process, at the national level and of course as a coordination at the European level. The cases that we can recall that this EU civil assistance mechanism has provided to Albania are significant.
The earthquake was an extremely important moment in this support, but also what followed the pandemic again was the support of this civil defense union that eased our wounds and made it easier for us to face the invisible enemy. On the other hand, thanks to the direct assistance of the commissioner, we have received assistance from this mechanism from heavy fires last year, where aircraft used by countries such as the Netherlands or the Czech Republic belonged to this mechanism.
Europe has set up this mechanism in the function of the necessity to face together the change of climate and the consequences of the change of climate exactly in our environment. The environment of every country, of Europe. The EU mechanism is at the forefront of trying to guarantee the greatest possible support for Ukraine. Everything that is not weapons, from food, ambulances, medicines, fuel assistance, etc. Albania's membership in this EU of civil support is a very significant step, but also a great relief for us, if we take into account the needs we have. "It is not just a matter of receiving, but also of giving" , declared Rama.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Janez Lenercic said that it is important for our country to rely on the solidarity of EU countries in cases of disasters such as earthquakes, fires or floods.
"It is a pleasure to be in Albania. The first official mission was here in Albania, after the terrible earthquake where many people lost their lives. Today we are not dealing with any emergency and why there was a big fire in Sazan. In both cases the EU civil protection mechanism was immediately activated, as was the plane from Greece that came to put out the fires in Sazan.
The civil protection mechanism aims to strengthen cooperation between EU member states and participating countries in civil protection to improve prevention and response to natural disasters. The founder of the agency is the European Commission (EC) which plays a key role in coordinating disaster response by contributing over 75% of transport costs. In addition to EU member states, there are currently six other participating countries in the mechanism, starting with northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Turkey, Iceland, Norway and Serbia.
