No one is immune, everyone is at risk of health problems due to high temperatures. This is how neurologist Ereida Raklli expressed it in Dita Jõne, according to which, high temperatures disorient the neurotransmitters in the nervous system and subsequently increase the level of anxiety and depression.
"Temperatures both high and low are significant and documented in mental health. The consequences are related by disorienting neurotransmitters in the nervous system that have a role in stabilizing mood, regulating behavior and sleep. High temperatures increase cortisol, the stress hormone that causes sleep disorders by sleeping in fewer and less quality hours. All these affect the level of anxiety and depression. People suffering from anxiety and depression have an increase in symptomatic complaints during the summer. In addition, it affects any disease of the central nervous system, from multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, etc. High temperatures also affect children and teenagers, pregnant women".
Referring to a 2023 study published in "Lancet" she said that, "a 1 degree increase in average monthly temperature leads to an increase in aggression by 3-5% and suicidal behavior by 1.5% more".
The most dangerous complication from high temperatures, according to neurologists, is heatstroke, which can lead to coma.
"The biggest and most dangerous complication is heat stroke where the body cannot control the temperature which rises rapidly to 40-41 degrees, the sweating mechanism breaks down and the person is lethargic, loses consciousness and may fall into a coma and this requires immediate action. The first thing that is done is the emergency notification, when you see that you do not feel well, you should go to the shade and take as much water as possible. You need a significant amount of fluid intake, 2-3 liters per day."
Speaking about the signs of dehydration, the doctor advises taking as much fluids as possible, avoiding exposure and movement from 11:00-16:00 as well as
"Extreme fatigue, headache, dizziness, feeling of vomiting, scanty and dark-colored urination, indicate that the body is experiencing abnormalities and we have not taken enough water. High temperatures are associated with pronounced sweat, loss of electrolytes and these have consequences with a decrease in cognition. People who have mental work feel burdened. We recommend that from 11-16 in the afternoon to avoid going out in high temperatures. Work should be before 11 am and after 4 pm to avoid the consequences of temperatures in the body. Avoid crowded places, better a walk in the shade than in closed places. The elderly should stay at home."
Even the doctor Bruna Shiroka emphasized that every organism has problems with extreme temperatures.
"The thermal effect is evident in all human beings. The increase in temperatures beyond the extreme has an effect on the organization of the person, whether sick or healthy, the consequences are different from a patient with a chronic disease and a healthy one. The thermal effect can be extreme even in healthy people. There is a state of lyoptmia, fainting, with hypertension, patients can fall and collapse unintentionally in the premises where they walk, or where they went to receive a service. It happened not infrequently even inside the center with a hyperglycemic state due to the increased amount of sweat due to the heat".
Doctor Shiroka advises "to avoid exposure to the sun at peak time, staying in air conditioning at a not too high temperature difference between the outside environment and the one where you are staying, because it is a thermal stress that affects the human body" .
She said that these days there have been increased cases of patients with Covid./ A2
