The Strasbourg court has ruled in favor of the Roma and Egyptian communities, concluding that the Albanian government has discriminated against the children of these communities. The lawsuit was filed by 5 women from the Roma and Egyptian communities against the segregation of the 9-year school "Naim Frashëri" in the city of Korça.
For more than 10 years, in the school 'Naim Frashër', the students of the city are no longer enrolled, leaving in this school only Roma and Egyptian children. Strasbourg has found the Albanian government responsible for not enforcing the law to enroll children in schools according to the neighborhoods where they live, preferring other schools and leaving 'Naim Frashëri' only for discriminated communities.
The decision is final and the Albanian government must compensate with 4500 euros each of the women of the Roma and Egyptian communities, while for the same problems denunciations in the office of the Commissioner against Discrimination have gone from Gjirokastra, Berat and Shkodra.
