Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano has been undergoing treatment in the hospital for 10 days as a result of breathing problems.

According to sources from the private hospital where the historical leader of the SP is being treated, it is known that the current health condition of the former prime minister is currently good. Also, it is announced that he was given an intervention to facilitate his breathing.

While it is learned that the rehabilitation of the young man is slow and difficult. Meanwhile, earlier it was reported that the doctors have decided to remove him from intubation and supply him with oxygen through a tube that connects directly to the trachea, a procedure known as "Tracheostomy".

The former socialist prime minister was intubated after he had a chronic respiratory problem that, in medical terms, is known as COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that narrows and damages the airways of the lungs.

On Thursday, August 24, 2023, Nano was escorted by ambulance from his home to the hospital after having breathing problems. The former prime minister had health problems two years ago. He suffers from COPD, which can cause many complications, including: respiratory infections, heart problems, hypertension and depression.

What is COPD?

People with COPD are more likely to get the flu. A respiratory infection can make breathing much more difficult and can cause further damage to lung tissue. An annual flu shot and regular pneumonia vaccination can prevent some infections. On the other hand, for reasons that are not fully understood, COPD can increase the risk of heart disease, including heart attack.

Stopping smoking can reduce this risk. COPD can also cause high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs (pulmonary hypertension) and increase the risk of lung cancer. Unlike some diseases, COPD has a clear cause and a clear path to prevention. Most cases are directly related to smoking and the best way to prevent these diseases is to not smoke or stop smoking.
