Drug report/ Albania's cocaine supply from Bolivia remains a transit route

Concern about drug trafficking in our country is no longer as it was a few years ago, but Albania still remains one of the transit countries for heroin and cocaine, according to the latest report of the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime .

In this report, Albania is included in one of the maps where the "source and transit countries of heroin shipments from the period 2018 to 2021" are colored . Here our country is included by being colored pink.

Another map shows the cocaine and cannabis traffic channels from Bolivia to other countries, but also shows a direct link between Albanian and Bolivian traffickers. 

It is already known that the groups of Albanian traffickers have gone to the source of the traffic of hard drugs, establishing their contacts with producers in Ecuador, Mexico or Colombia. The drug comes to the Port of Durrës, where loads of cocaine have been regularly discovered on ships coming from Latin American countries.

The summary of the drug report for 2023 admits that drug users worldwide have increased, thanks to the decrease in the price of synthetic substances.

The data shows that there are 13.2 million drug users worldwide, about 18 percent more than previously estimated. Meanwhile, the number of people suffering from substance use disorders has risen to 39.5 million, a 45% increase over 10 years.

For Albania, there is still no official figure on cocaine users. The most recent data were published in a 2017 report by the UN, according to which the annual prevalence of use for Albania was 2.5%, the highest in the whole world.

In fact, the few data published by the police confirm that the situation of cocaine consumption in our country is serious.
A few months ago, the police hit a drug sales network of 20 people in Tirana.

Tregu i këtyre shitësve ishte fokusuar kryesisht në gjimnazet e kryeqyetit. Nxënësit ishin kthyer në konsumatorë të rregullt të kanabisit, heroinës dhe kokainës, sipas të dhënave të policisë. Rrjeti i shitjeve shtrihej në të gjithë kryeqytetin, që nga Ali Demi, rruga Bardhyl, Oxhaku, zona e Bllokut dhe shkolla Petro Nini, Stacioni i Trenit, Ish-parku, Lapraka etj.

Fill pas këtij lajmi, mjekët konfirmuan se rastet e të miturve që përdorin droga të rënda janë shtuar. Deklaratë e fortë ishte ajo e mjekes toksikologe Amarda Gashi, sipas së cilës vajza nga 12 apo 13 vjeç janë paraqitur për të kërkuar ndihmë në spital për shkak të përdorimit të kokainës.

“Kokaina ka nisur të përdoret dhe nga vajzat të cilat vijnë në pavionin tonë për ndihmë. Rastet emergjente janë të shpeshta gjatë fundjavës, për shkak të festave të shfrenuara”– u shpreh Gashi për mediat.

Për të kuptuar më shumë shërbejnë disa shifra të punës së policisëm sipas të cilës vetëm në 3 muajt e parë të vitit 2023 ishin arrestuar rreth 450 persona për shpërndarje droge.

Deri disa vite më parë, mendohej se droga që përdorej më shumë në Tiranë ishte kanabisi, një drogë e lehtë, përdorimi i të cilës po legalizohet në shumë vende të Europës, shkruan lapsi.

Por situata ka ndryshuar. Arrestimi i qindra shpërndarësve të kokainës në pak muaj, do të thotë se është “e bardha” që po dominon tregun.

The World Drug Report 2023 explains that social and economic inequalities drive – and are fueled by – drug challenges; environmental destruction and human rights abuses caused by illicit drug economies; and the growing dominance of synthetic drugs.
