She left the baby alone at home and went to buy cigarettes, the Albanian woman

The 37-year-old woman, who left her one-year-old daughter alone in their home for about an hour last Tuesday, was found guilty of endangering a minor by the three-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki.

The Albanian-born mother was sentenced to six months in prison, and three years suspended, she did not appear in court and was represented by a lawyer.

According to the indictment, the incident was discovered Tuesday morning when tenants of the building called the Immediate Action Center and reported hearing a baby crying for some time from a mezzanine apartment and did not know if he was home alone.

As the police officer who arrived with his colleagues at the apartment in the center of Thessaloniki testified in court, they found the baby crying, but no one opened the front door when they persistently rang the bell.

"At first we thought they might be sleeping and we kept ringing the bell. After at least 20 minutes the woman appeared and told us that the child was hers. We told him that we have been here for 20 minutes and we want to see if he is okay", testified the policeman.

Regarding where the mother was when she left the baby alone in the apartment, she told the police that she had gone to buy cigarettes, although today she claims that they were at the supermarket to do some shopping.

"The child was in good health and the mother panicked when she saw us outside the house. She told us that she had gone to buy cigarettes and we repeated that we had been waiting for her for at least 20 minutes," added the policeman in his statement.

The defense lawyer who represented the 37-year-old said in court that the accused is shocked by the incident and has preferred not to come to court and stay at home with her baby.

As she said, the 37-year-old woman was separated from her husband and she had nowhere to leave her child on Tuesday morning, when she had to go shopping at the supermarket./ Protothema
