World Bank Report: Parents' emigration has serious consequences for

Emigration remained a challenge not only in Albania but around the world. According to a recent World Bank report, over 184 million people, or 2.3% of the world's population, live outside their country of origin today.

Almost half of them are from low- and middle-income countries.

The World Bank's report on immigration concludes that immigration brings quite negative effects even when family members benefit from remittances sent by immigrants.

Albanian immigrants sent 834 million euros last year, the highest level since 2008.

They are the only financial source for nearly 26 percent of Albanian families, keeping consumption alive through the financial inclusion of the population, but discouraging employment.

Referring to Albania, the report emphasizes that the departure of parents in emigration directly affects children in the social sphere. They attend school less and have poor well-being.

It is further emphasized that they have behavioral problems as well as a difficult emotional state. Countries with high middle incomes have the highest number of immigrants, but in contrast, countries with middle income levels such as Albania and the Dominican Republic, have the highest rates of emigration compared to other countries in the world.

Economic migration is high, further depriving the country of talent and manpower. For those who stay, the quality of life has eroded in urban areas, the World Bank analysed.
