Why has the legal profession disappeared from the race for Attorney General?!
Attorney Lulzim Alushaj

In the last race for Attorney General, something happened that until then seemed unusual: a lawyer decided to defy tradition and run for the leadership of the highest prosecution body.

He was Attorney Lulzim Alushaj , the only representative of the legal profession who had the courage to enter a competition historically dominated by magistrates.

Today, in the new race, the legal profession is completely absent. Not a single lawyer has filed a candidacy. This cannot be considered a coincidence.

When a profession with thousands of lawyers, which the Constitution recognizes as one of the pillars of the justice system, does not produce a single candidate for the highest prosecutorial position, an inevitable question arises: what message did the legal profession receive from the way the last competition was conducted?

Has the belief been created that candidacies coming from the legal profession do not have a real opportunity to be evaluated on the basis of merit?

Is it perceived that the process in practice favors candidates from within the system, making the participation of lawyers merely formal?

The High Prosecutorial Council has the obligation not only to conduct a lawful procedure, but also to create confidence that every lawyer who meets the constitutional criteria has a real opportunity to compete.

When, after a single candidacy from the ranks of the legal profession in the last race, no lawyer is running today, this is a perception that the KLP cannot ignore.

Equally worrying is the silence of the legal profession itself. A profession that defends the rights of citizens every day before the prosecution and courts cannot exclude itself from the race to lead justice institutions.

The lack of candidates is not just a lack of ambition; it may also be a consequence of a lack of confidence that the race is truly open.

The candidacy of Attorney Lulzim Alushaj remains to this day the only concrete attempt by a lawyer to challenge this reality.

The fact that after that experience, no lawyer has chosen to run should serve as an alarm bell, both for the leaders of the legal profession and for the High Prosecutorial Council.

A competition where an entire category of lawyers no longer sees reason to participate cannot be considered a success for the system.

On the contrary, it raises serious questions about trust, equality of opportunity, and the real openness of institutions towards the legal profession.
