"New perspectives for Kukës" is the newest program of Great Britain that will offer qualifications and create jobs so that citizens can stay in Kukës.
Invited to the show "Opinion", the British ambassador Alastair King-Smith said that this program is worth about 8.3 million pounds as he added that he will work with the Albanian government to help the communities in Albania so that people have a positive future.
Blendi Fevziu: A few months ago you said that the United Kingdom will also be focused on investments and development projects in the north of Albania. What exactly does she mean?
Ambassador Alastair King-Smith: We have already launched a new program in Kukës county, called New Perspectives for Kukës, which will provide qualifications and create jobs, meaning people will have more opportunities to stay. It is clear to me that one of the reasons why people may feel that they are forced to leave Albania, and then end up in traffickers' networks, is because they feel that there is nothing for them in their country. Now the UK is redoubling its efforts. And this contains a number of elements and is also part of the Joint Communiqué. We will invest for economic development. We have two billion pounds of UK export finance available that can be used to support strategic infrastructure projects.
Blendi Fevziu: What is the budget of the project?
Ambassador Alastair King-Smith: So far the program is worth around £8.3 million. But I have raised this issue in London, and we need to increase funding significantly. And it's certainly not just us. There is also the government of Albania, there are also other donors and partners. We will work together to really help those communities so people have a positive future.
Blendi Fevziu: Mainly in the North, but also in other parts of Albania.
Ambassador Alastair King-Smith: We want this to turn into something that benefits all of Albania, but we will certainly focus on where there are these specific challenges that are driving people away.
