The TOXIC waste scandal repeats, over 58 TONS of trash from Albania are seized
"Toxic Waste": Metal Gate

Over 58 tons of ecotoxic waste, which two different Italian companies based in Lombardy were attempting to illegally import from Albania, were seized by the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs and Monopolies Agency at the port of Ancona as part of the " Metal Gate " operation.

The legal representatives of the companies involved have been denounced for serious environmental crimes.

The raids took place after it was discovered that there were discrepancies in documents during the inspection of "sensitive" goods being transported.

Waste officially declared as ' aluminum discharge' was in reality characterized by a high concentration of highly toxic zinc, lead and copper.

These elements have proven to be highly toxic to the aquatic environment, highlighting the potential risk that their uncontrolled disposal could pose.

Analysis of the waste, conducted by experts from the Regional Environmental Protection Agency, confirmed its dangerousness, classifying it as ecotoxic waste, neighboring media report.

The companies involved will now have to answer for crimes such as "illegal waste trafficking", "ideological lie committed by a private individual in a public document" and "obstruction of control activities" . 

The operation was carried out in the wake of a previous activity that led to the sequestration of approximately 16 tons of urban waste.

This is not the first time that Albania has been involved in a toxic waste 'scandal'.

An investigation remains open by the Durrës Prosecutor's Office regarding 102 containers suspected of carrying toxic waste exported from the port of Durrës to Thailand.
