An official reaction from the Albanian Embassy in the United Kingdom has forced the BBC to correct the title of an article that stigmatized an entire community for the actions of a few individuals.
The BBC article, published on July 24, was originally titled “Albanians used false papers for settlement scheme,” a wording that attributed the criminal acts to the three individuals, all Albanians as a community. After the intervention of the Albanian Embassy in London, the BBC changed the title to “Trio used false papers for settlement scheme.”
Embassy's reaction
British Media Reporting on Albanians: BBC, July 24
First, we would like to express our gratitude to all Albanians who have raised their voices against unfair stereotypes and unfounded generalizations in the media. Your responses help protect the dignity of the Albanian community and promote a fairer, more responsible and fact-based public debate. We thank you for your commitment.
The media has a special responsibility to report accurately, without bias and without feeding stereotypes.

In this spirit, the Albanian Embassy reacted to the BBC on the report, which initially bore the title: "Albanians used false papers for settlement scheme", attributing the actions of three individuals to an entire nationality.
We pointed out to the BBC that such a formulation is unfair, inaccurate and stigmatizing. When a criminal case concerns specific individuals, responsibility is individual and not collective. Labeling an entire nation for the actions of a few contributes to the creation and reinforcement of prejudice against thousands of Albanian citizens who live, work and contribute honestly in Britain.
The BBC then corrected the headline, replacing it with the wording "Trio used false papers for settlement scheme".
The Embassy will continue to react whenever Albanian citizens or Albania are treated unfairly, discriminatoryly or stereotypically in the media. Respect for the truth and for the dignity of every community is not only a journalistic standard, but a fundamental value of a democratic society.
