The trial against Laert Haxhiu, who is accused of a series of serious criminal offenses, began this Tuesday at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime.

In the first session, Haxhiu submitted a written statement in which he announced that he did not want to be present at the trial, but agreed to be represented by his defense attorneys, Detar Hysi and Dritan Jahaj.

The court announced that the process is in the phase of administering evidence and questioning witnesses called as part of the judicial review. 12 witnesses appeared in today's session.

One of them was Xhuljano Xhaferraj, who was accompanied to court by prison police, handcuffed, as he is under the security measure of "prison arrest" for another case, that of theft.

Xhaferraj testified about the murder of his brother, Fridman Xhaferraj, an event that occurred in 2022. He stated that he was in prison at the time of the murder and that he only learned about the event after his release.

"When my brother was killed in 2022, I was in prison. When I was released, he had been dead for three days. I found out from the police that my brother had been killed," the witness is reported to have stated.

He also said that about 20 days before the incident, he had communicated with his brother, who had told him that he would be leaving for Italy.

According to his testimony, Fridman Xhaferraj had been in Elbasan with Lulëzim Spahina and had planned to travel to Greece with him.

"The other brother was in Greece. Fridman was with Lulëzim Spahina in Elbasan, he was going to Greece with Lulëzim. That's what they told me," Xhuljano Xhaferraj declared before the court.

The trial against Laert Haxhiu continues with the hearing of witnesses and the administration of evidence presented in the investigative file.
