European Parliament urges Rama to halt construction on Kushner-linked project

European lawmakers adopted a resolution calling for the immediate imposition of a moratorium on new permits and construction in Albania's protected areas.

From Politico.eu / On Wednesday, the European Parliament urged Albania to suspend construction in protected areas, increasing pressure on Prime Minister Edi Rama over a luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, which has sparked the country's largest protests in decades.

Albania has experienced 18 days of non-stop protests, dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution,” against the project, as well as protests organized by the Albanian diaspora in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Australia. In addition to demanding a halt to the project and the repeal of key laws on investments and protected areas, protesters have also called for the resignation of Edi Rama.

"The flamingo protest shows that citizens care about environmental protection and membership in the European Union. We will stand by them, supporting the protest against Trump's allies who exploit their natural heritage and supporting their path towards the EU," said Dutch MEP Tineke Strik, shadow rapporteur for the Greens/European Free Alliance group on the European Commission's report on Albania for 2025.

Lawmakers in Strasbourg adopted their resolution on the European Commission's 2025 Albania Report, calling for an immediate moratorium on new permits and construction in protected areas.

This action reflects the warnings of the European Commission itself, which in its report and in recent weeks has emphasized that Albania risks losing momentum in the EU accession process if it continues with the project without a Full Environmental Impact Assessment.

The European Parliament and the European Commission are also pressuring Albania to withdraw from changes to the law on protected areas and repeal the law on strategic investments, which paved the way for development projects like Jared Kushner's.

"Europe must pay close attention to what is happening in Albania. There is no better guarantee for the path towards the European Union than a vibrant, conscious people capable of mobilizing against predatory capitalism, in defense of justice, the common good and freedom," said Italian MEP Ilaria Salis during Tuesday's debate.

Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos told reporters on Monday that she had received “guarantees from the Albanian Government that a Full Environmental Impact Assessment will be carried out and that European environmental protection standards will be respected.”

She also added that Albania “is one of the most advanced countries in the enlargement process and has made significant progress in environmental protection.”

Edi Rama reacted to the rejected amendment and the adopted resolution with a post on Instagram, criticizing him and those who initiated the recent protests, while insisting that: “Flamingos will be protected, Vjosa-Narta will be protected, while Zvërnec will be developed on the basis of an Environmental Impact Assessment, according to European Union standards.”
