Horrifying footage of the environmental massacre in Vjosa, watch as living
Footage taken from Inside Story

This catastrophic oil pollution of the Vjosa River is just one of many episodes recorded on the river. The footage was captured near Poçem in Mallakastër, which lies at the foot of the Vlahina region, where the Gorisht-Kocul oilfield, managed by Albpetrol, is located. Located between the rural area of the Vjosa Valley and the Shushica Valley, there are about 150 active oil wells, which go up to 1,500 meters deep.

'The presence of hydrocarbons in water is harmful and carcinogenic, but when such insoluble orgone substances are released into water, and that water is used for various functions, they can lead to contamination of drinking water and food products,' said biologist Aleko Miho.

The presence of such pollutants can be catastrophic, even carcinogenic. Such waste ends up in river waters and through groundwater, and from water they end up in the entire food chain. They become even more dangerous, as they remain deposited in the body, because the body cannot digest them.

'They are deposited and we cannot digest them, and many times tumors are created, sometimes the origin of which is known and many other times not,' said Aleko Miho, biologist.

This vast underground wealth could turn into an environmental disaster if not managed properly.

In these images recorded by Inside Story in June 2025, it is clearly seen how oil flows freely in nature, contrary to any obligation that companies have to take measures to prevent such events. This environmental massacre risks eradicating the rare living creatures of the Valley. Clear evidence is also these images that show a dead lizard and several birds after they went to the river to drink water, but got stuck in the oil residue. It is understandable what could have happened to the fish...

'Oil has another element, kilometers, especially crude oil that flows into the Vjosa, oil has all its inorganic elements, which have a main feature that they stay there for a long time,' said Olsi Nika, hydrologist.

'From the reduction of water quality, the reduction of nutrients in the water, it goes into the process of eutrophication that produces more algae, which in turn, as a defense mechanism, produce poisons or toxins that then kill fish. Fish are poisoned, birds get them and they can also come to our table, especially from waste,' said Olsi Nika, hydrologist.
