A complex surgical intervention was successfully performed at QSUNT on a 29-year-old patient with a rare congenital malformation (lumbar meningocele), who had been denied surgery for years due to severe mobility and sensation problems.
The news was announced by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albana Koçiu, in a post on social networks.
Neurosurgeon Prof. Kita Sallabanda, after a careful assessment, intervened to remove a large fluid-filled sac that was obstructing normal life. The operation took place in two stages: first, a ventriculo-peritoneal derivation was placed to reduce the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid, and today, in collaboration with Neurosurgeon Prof. Artur Jumarin and plastic-reconstructive surgeon Prof. Nardi Kolën, the surgical closure of the meningocele was successfully completed", said Koçiu.
Minister Koçiu said that this rare operation due to the patient's age ended with complete success, without damaging the nerve functions and giving the 29-year-old a chance for a better life.
