Offered 20 thousand euros of bail in exchange for freedom, GJKKO leaves Ilir

The Special Court has rejected the request of former Minister of Health and former head of EU funds management, Ilir Beqaj, for the replacement of the security measure.

After 21 months in prison, Beqaj offered 20,000 euros as a financial guarantee for his release at the court hearing on March 31.

Also on March 31, the GJKKO rejected the request of Beqaj's associate, Ermal Kurtulaj, for freedom, even though he had offered financial guarantees.

Beqaj and Kurtulaj have been in prison since July 4, 2024, when they were arrested in connection with the SASPAC abuse file.

According to SPAK, Ilir Beqaj, in his capacity as the General Director of SASPAC, ordered Kurtulaj, with whom he had early acquaintances as they were partners in the company Intech+, to implement fictitious procurements in violation of EU laws for EUSAIR projects only during the years 2022-2023, the money of which ended up in Beqaj's pockets.

Tenders, according to SPAK, were made only for document purposes and later than the conclusion and implementation of contracts with various companies.

Beqaj is accused of 5 criminal offenses in the SASPAC file, including passive corruption, violation of equality in tenders, forgery of documents, fraud, fraud in collaboration and failure to declare assets in the case of 50% of the shares of the "Gzona" restaurant, otherwise known as the "Albanian Food and Hospitality Lab", an apartment in Vlora and a car.

Meanwhile, another process against Beqaj for the sterilization concession continues in parallel. As part of this file, SPAK has placed under preventive seizure the apartment suspected of being hidden by Beqaj, 3 bank accounts of the defendants worth around 200 thousand euros in total, 19.4% of the shares of "Gzona" and 3 cars.
