Macron and Sanchez against the Rama-Meloni formula: Albania's model for
Emmanuel Macron and Pedro Sanchez

Prime Minister Edi Rama's agreement with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni for immigrants has brought many reactions from Europeans. Although it was initially seen as a model that could be adapted by other European Union countries, for France and Spain, Albania's model does not solve problems with immigrants, but creates them.

In a press conference at the end of the EU council summit, Macron said that the only model that works for immigrants is the European one. According to him, EU countries cannot act in isolation.

"I hear a lot of comments about this or that model for immigrants. The only model that works in the face of irregular immigration and all clandestine movements is a European model that is pragmatic but respects our values."

According to him, if it acts in isolation, European interests are destroyed.

"If we act in isolation, we collectively destroy European interests. In the past, other models have not demonstrated their effectiveness and what has blocked Europe was when countries wanted to act alone and did not want "solidarity", Macron emphasized.

Even the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, was firm in his position on this issue. He said that he was against Albania's model for immigrants, but for cooperation with the countries of origin.

"Our position is clear. We are not in favor of these formulas like the one of Albania's model that do not address the problems and create others. We are for a broader vision, in favor of cooperation with the countries of origin, in favor of regular immigration".

At the end of the EU Council, Sanchez criticized Hungary for its immigration policies and emphasized that Europe's well-being does not depend on migration policies.

"Hungary has taken European policies for a long time, it is not responding to the needs of the moment in Ukraine. For migrants we have a position based on humanity. An orderly and responsible migration is the answer to the democratic problem affecting Spain and Europe. Our well-being depends on the migration policy. The Spanish government has a very clear idea: the protection of coherence and international law, as in the Middle East, if we are not consistent with our principles we lost the moral war and all of us as Europeans would lose", he underlined./A2
