North Macedonian authorities are investigating whether a fire that killed at least 59 people at a club in Kocani is a case of corruption, Interior Minister Pance Toskovski said.

"This company does not have a legal operating license. This license, like many other things in the past, is linked to corruption," the interior minister said at a press conference in Kocani, the site of the tragedy during a club concert in the early hours of Sunday morning.

More than twenty people are considered suspects in the investigation, according to the Interior Minister.

Among them are the two main members of the hip-hop group DNK, very popular in North Macedonia.

The band's concert started at midnight.

About three hours later the fire broke out.

Among the suspects are the club owner's son, the director of the management company, and members of the store's security.

About fifteen people have been arrested, including employees of the Ministry of Economy.

The remaining suspects have been hospitalized or are among the dead, according to Pance Toshkovski.
