The Church of Albania has reiterated its support for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (under the Moscow Patriarchate) and Metropolitan Onufriy, while condemning what it describes as the “persecution” facing the “canonical” Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In a statement issued before Christmas, the Church of Albania stressed the urgent need to end the civil conflict in Ukraine and reaffirmed its solidarity with Ukrainian Orthodox believers.

“Persecution, imprisonment, sacrilege of cult objects and confiscation of the property of churches and monasteries are brutal acts,” the statement said. “These acts become even more brutal when imposed by the legislatures of democratic countries.” The church specifically criticized the recent Law of Ukraine 8371, adopted on August 24, 2024, which claims to aim to abolish the “canonical” Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

The Church of Albania expressed concern for millions of Ukrainian Orthodox believers, clergy and monasteries under the leadership of Metropolitan Onufriy, stating that they face "a flagrant violation of their religious rights."

The statement avoids addressing the plight of members of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which has suffered significantly due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine since February 2022. Furthermore, the Church of Albania did not criticize the Russian occupation or the Moscow Patriarchate's approval of the war, Orthodox Times reports.

Instead, the Church of Albania took the opportunity to reiterate its opposition to the autocephaly granted to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It described the process as divisive and has previously published similar criticisms of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Ukrainian legislation, which it sees as persecution of the "canonical" church led by Metropolitan Onufriy.
