Aldo Bare, sentenced to life imprisonment as the leader of the "Lushnjë gang", has requested that his sentence be reduced, but the Supreme Court has rejected the request.

Although sentenced to life imprisonment, Bare attempted to have his sentence reduced by a few days, arguing that he had been on good behavior while in prison. This had not been previously accepted by other courts, so he appealed to the Supreme Court with a second lawsuit, relying on the law on the rights of convicts.

The Supreme Court, which had previously reviewed his case, decided to uphold the life sentence, a decision that was confirmed in September 2022, ten years after the 2012 Appeals Court decision. Prior to that, the Constitutional Court had ordered a retrial of the case due to procedural violations.

Bare, arrested in Turkey in 2006, was extradited to Albania in late 2009, arriving at Mother Teresa Airport under strict surveillance by security forces.

But who is Aldo Bare?

Also known as Alfred Shkurti, he began his criminal 'career' in 1997, after the murder of his brother by Artur Daja's gang. In revenge, Bare formed an armed group in Lushnja, which, according to the prosecution, has committed over 20 murders, dozens of injuries and imposed fines.

His gang included close people, friends and collaborators, including Ilir Stërgu, Afrim Hoxha, Arben and Enver Boriçi, Enver Dondollaku and later Maksim Çela, Erion Cici, Dritan Vila and Leonard Prifti, who participated in criminal acts that shook the city of Lushnja.

For decades, Aldo Bare and his group have created a violent criminal network, while attempts to reduce his sentence have been met with successive rejection by judicial systems.
