Arben Çuko will be the new Prefect of Fier District. The former deputy of the Socialist Party replaces Mbarime Isufaj, who was appointed to this position less than four months ago.

Çuko has held a number of important positions, such as deputy of the Parliament of Albania, director general of prisons, commander of the Republic Guard, adviser to the president of Kosovo for security and since June 2023 he is an adviser to the Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja.

Arben Çuko has been the deputy of the Socialist Party for Lushnje since 2009 and resigned in 2017 to be appointed head of the General Directorate of Prisons. In this period he was accused of having committed passive corruption.

Arben Çuko was accused of taking a bribe from the contract killer, Olsi Karagjozi, to transfer him to another prison. But since Čuko did not do such a thing, it was precisely Karagjozi who denounced him. The latter was convicted for the assassination of 5 businessmen.

Now, the socialists have decided to reinstate Arben Çuko, entrusting him with the direction of the district which he represented in two mandates in the Parliament of Albania.

In 2020, the Court of Tirana decided to finally dismiss the case against the former General Director of Prisons, Arben Çuko. Earlier, the charge against him was softened by the Court of Serious Crimes from "corruption of high officials" to "non-indictment of crime".
