A police officer has been put in handcuffs, after being accused of robbing a sum of money during the search of an apartment. The arrested officer is citizen Geraldo Nela, 24 years old, with the duty of the Service Corps at the Cërrik Police Station.

He was put in handcuffs after the denunciation of Belshi resident Andrea Gjini, that during the control of his and his brother's apartment yesterday morning, officer Geraldo Nela robbed them of 30,000 euros. Officer Geraldo Nela is charged with the criminal offense of "Theft committed while abusing duty".

"The arrest of this citizen was carried out in flagrante delicto as part of the procedural actions authorized by the Prosecution at the Court of First Instance Elbasan, in connection with the report of the citizen SK, residing in Marinzë, Belsh, who in the report of claimed that during an inspection carried out near his family members, on 20.12.2022, an amount of 30 thousand euros was stolen from this citizen in the external premises of the apartment owned by him.

In connection with this event and as a result of continuous investigative work, it became possible to catch and arrest police officer Inspector GN in the act.

Also, as material evidence, the amount of 30,000 euros that this police officer had stolen from the SK citizen was seized," the Police announcement states.

While Andrea Gjini stated yesterday to the media that: "We demand justice, that an extraordinary event has taken place to steal 30,000 euros from a police officer who does not exist in the world. We should be protected by the police, not stolen by the state. The police entered my brother's house. Around 07:20 in the morning, I was in the bar, because I have a bar, and I was working. The chief of police comes and tells me that there is a search in your apartment and that they have come from Tirana. Ok, I said, no problem. They searched my apartment surrounded by masked police. After the check they made on me and my brother, 30 thousand euros were stolen by a police officer, which my brother's daughter-in-law put in her name and all. We have since the morning that the police are not taking any kind of measures. We went to the Cërrik police station, Belshi, they don't take any measures where the brother's daughter-in-law pointed out that this boy is (referred to the accused policeman) because he also had a swollen sweatshirt. The brother fled to Greece in 1993 and has now returned. He worked in immigration and with great effort".

The investigative materials have been referred to the Prosecutor's Office at the Elbasan Court of First Instance for further action.
