The Netherlands suspends the Schengen agreement, restores border controls. Norway does the same

The Dutch government announced this Wednesday morning to the European Union that from the beginning of December it will suspend the Schengen treaty and restore controls at its borders for 6 months.

"On 11 November, the Commission received a notification from the Dutch authorities regarding the reintroduction of border controls from 9 December to 8 June 2025. As always, the Commission will assess the notification and remain in close contact with the authorities." This is what the spokeswoman of the EU Commission said during the daily press conference.

Following the government's announcement of plans to limit irregular immigration and migrant smuggling, the Dutch Minister for Asylum and Migration announced on Monday the start of checks from 12 September.

The Dutch government had announced unprecedented measures to curb immigration, including reinstating border controls.

The measures include a ban on limiting family members who can join a person who has been granted asylum in the Netherlands, reducing the duration of temporary visas and a willingness to declare parts of Syria ravaged by civil war as areas of safe, so that the authorities can reject the asylum requests of immigrants from those regions. Syrians make up the largest national group of immigrants arriving in the Netherlands.

"We want to make the Netherlands as unattractive as possible," said Migration and Asylum Minister Marjolein Faber, a member of the nationalist and anti-Islam Freedom Party, founded by Geert Wilders.

Even Norway, which was already restricting the free movement of people, decided to extend the ban on the Schengen agreement until December 1.

The Minister of Justice, Emilie Mahn, said that this measure is being expanded in an effort to ensure greater protection of citizens from possible acts of terrorism.

The first ban went into effect on October 1. Norway is one of the countries outside the EU (the others are Switzerland and Iceland) that had signed free movement agreements with Europe.

But The Hague and Oslo are not the only governments that have erected walls on borders, and the treaty that was supposed to make Europe a zone of free movement, a free territory, already has several cracks.

Currently, Germany has also reintroduced border controls, a decision taken by Social Democrat Chancellor Scholz a day after the electoral defeat suffered in Saxony and Thuringia elections by the advance of the xenophobic ultra-right AfD.

Even France, which had reintroduced security measures for the Olympics, has yet to lift its ban. In the end, Italy has also strengthened the control measures, but only on the border with Slovenia.
