The Assembly of Presidents of the Bar Associations of Greece has today held a media conference on the Beleri case, listing a number of violations according to them of the European Convention of Human Rights in this case by the Albanian state.
Lawyers Dhimitrios Vervesos, Chairman of the Assembly of Bar Associations of Greece and Patrick Henry, President of Lawyers Without Borders, former Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Council of Bars and Societies of Europe (ÇBE) requested that the Albanian authorities create the opportunity for Beler to take the oath as the elected mayor of Himara Municipality.
But during the conference, the lawyers were embarrassed when they were asked by the journalist Igli Çelmeta about the rights of Albanian citizens of Cham origin who are looking for properties in Greece. The lawyer has stated that they are in the conference only for the Beleri case.
REPLICAS:
Journalist: Greece does not allow Albanian citizens of Cham origin to claim property in Greece, is this not a violation of human rights? Would you also protest for this violation of the Greek state?
Is this also a violation of the protocols you mentioned earlier?
In Greece, is electoral corruption a criminal offense and if so, are the persons who commit this criminal offense arrested or released?
Lawyer: We have not come here to discuss the first issue you asked. We have come here to talk about the Beleri case and we will refer to it.
In Greece, of course, the one who is sentenced definitively and irrevocably by the Court is definitely arrested. But there is a sentence, there is a sentencing decision, it is not that someone is detained. Unless we have a reasonable suspicion that they will flee, move from the place they are held, or have the potential to commit other crimes, or be able to alter evidence that is in a criminal case. And we in the case of Beleri explained that he is not able to do any of these three.
We have come to talk only about the Beleri issue and we will only talk about this issue
