Greece has responded to Turkey, saying that official Athens does not recognize any ethnic minorities, only religious ones, even though it is one of the most multiethnic countries in Europe.

The response came after the Turkish Foreign Ministry congratulated on Twitter the 98th anniversary of the "Union of Turks in Xanthi" in Greece, where a Turkish minority is unofficially recognized to live.

Greece has cited the Treaty of Lausanne, the text of the 1923 agreement that defined the borders of Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey after the end of World War I, saying that it “clearly refers explicitly to a religious and not an ethnic minority in Thrace.”

"The Greek state fully respects the religious beliefs and cultural peculiarities of the Muslim minority in Thrace. It reserves for Greek citizens, members of the minority, full equality and citizenship," the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

According to researchers and also the testimonies of those living in Greece, the neighboring country is composed of ethnic Albanians, known as Arvanites, Aromanians, Asian Ponds, Slavic and Turkish minorities, among others. However, it has never officially recognized them, thus denying them rights and assimilating them within the large ethnic group called Greeks.
