The European Commission decided to postpone the full implementation of the new EU Entry/Exit System due to growing concerns about summer travel chaos.

The expansion of biometric technology across Schengen area border crossings has caused significant delays for airline, ferry and Eurotunnel passengers.

New border controls at the entrances and exits of the Schengen area, which also apply to Albanian citizens, began in October 2025. These rules, which include facial photography, fingerprinting, and data on accommodation payment for the days of stay in the Schengen area, are being gradually implemented at airports and ports in the United Europe.

The rollout of biometric technology has already experienced initial problems, causing significant delays for airline, ferry and Eurotunnel passengers. The system was due to become fully operational at EU borders in the spring, but this has now been pushed back to September 2026.

At airports where this system is operational, Schengen visa-exempt travelers from the UK, US and other non-EU countries must register their biometric data at dedicated kiosks. In some cases, delays have resulted in passengers missing their flights.

For travelers, this means that their passports will be stamped manually at borders in the coming months. This system also caused a several-day strike by truck drivers in the Balkan countries, which blocked border crossings and the transport of goods at the entrances and exits of the Schengen area, where they were fined for violating the stay limits, which are currently 90 days within a 180-day period. For Albanians and other citizens of the region, this is considered a liberalization of short-term visas, but in many cases the stay limits in the Schengen area have been violated abusively.

Thousands of travelers have been denied entry to the Schengen area from third countries during this period, since the new electronic system began implementation, calculating in real time the days of stay and the exceeding of the 90-day deadline.
