Ismail Lulani is one of the most original and powerful painters in the history of Albanian art. He ranks among the artists who strongly influenced the modernization of this art during the last quarter of the 20th century.
Lulan stands out and is appreciated as a stain colorist with powerful, warm and light colors. He created characters, especially with the figures of the mountaineers. He was an artist who was drawn to the lives of ordinary people in the northern part of the country.
The following painting is also true to this inspiration. It shows two girls in typical northern Albanian clothing.
The painting was accidentally discovered by an Albanian journalist, after the purchase of an old apartment in the Block area in Tirana, where an officer of Enver Hoxha's escort group once lived.
Lulani was born in Tuz and settled in Shkodër with his family at the age of 9. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts for monumental painting in Tirana in 1967 and was appointed a professor at this Academy, where he worked for several years.
Then, of his own accord, he left Tirana and settled in the city of Shkodra, where he worked as a professor at the Artistic High School of this city until he emerged as a free-lance painter.
He was a member of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania. Lulan skillfully explored all genres of painting, such as composition, landscape, portrait, still life. His paintings stand out for the magical games of color and expressive drawing.
Lulan has exhibited in many foreign countries such as Frascat, Rome, Paris, Linz (Austria), New York, Boston, Toronto, Athens, Beijing, Shanghai, Ireland, Romania, Belgium, Belgrade, Podgoric, Cetinj, Tivar, Ulcinj, Pristina , Alexandria, Turkey, Tunisia, Hungary, receiving high praise from foreign critics.
Many of his paintings are owned by different collectors in France, Austria, Italy, USA, Germany, etc./Day
