"Farmers heading for bankruptcy", Berisha: What Albania is doing does
Sali Berisha

DP Chairman Sali Berisha held a conversation with farmers in Berat today.

Berisha said that what Albania does does not happen in any country in the world, because there is no country that does not subsidize oil.

"There is no country in the world that does not subsidize oil. Farmers are threatened from moment to moment. Oil has reached such a price that the land can no longer be cultivated, because it is no longer profitable. Germany doubled the oil subsidy three weeks ago and has intervened again today. This is because otherwise farmers go bankrupt. The bankruptcy of farmers is a family drama for them and a blow to the whole society.

"Today, friends, you are 38-39 percent of the population and you give 19 percent of the GDP. You get 0.2 percent of the GDP as a reward for this. There is no other country like Albania. Look at how Kosovo subsidizes farmers, it has 4 times the subsidy for farmers than Albania has, even North Macedonia has this subsidy ratio. The government mocks the farmer and this brings barren land, this brings massive departure from Albania, this brings imports, this brings stratospheric prices," said Berisha.

Speaking about the Open Balkans, he said that the Serbian farmer, who is subsidized, has an advantage over the Albanian farmer.

"The Open Balkans is a big blow to the Albanian farmer. Serbia certainly dominates. This is because oil is subsidized there. There are no investments in agriculture, no serious investments. Some of the largest companies have left. SHELL was here, invested 1 billion, which came in 2009. TAP is finished, it was contracted before Rama came to power. No large companies have come. They have not come because when they look at the climate, when they see that they have taken the ANA hostage, what are they going to do here. The situation is very difficult and needs answers," Berisha said.

He promised that when the DP comes to power, subsidies in agriculture will increase 5 times. He said that farmers will be given oil without any taxes.

"We have a program and it is a program that you will have priority over. When we were in government, we invested 3 billion euros in rural Albania. Rural Albania in 2005, in terms of the road network, 95 percent were roads inherited over centuries. It was not done that way. We did everything and will do everything, so that the infrastructure in the village is that of the city neighborhoods. Just as a neighborhood in the city has infrastructure, just as it has a health center, everything that is needed to live, the village should have it too. We did not bring that project to the end. We judged that olive trees have potential and we invested in them. Subsidies in agriculture will increase 5 times when we come to government, they will go to 250 million. This is just the beginning. Taxes on oil will be the same as in North Macedonia and Kosovo. Farmers will be given oil without any taxes," declared the democratic leader.
