Gezim Troka , 50, was sentenced to six years in prison in 2008 after an Albanian court found him guilty in absentia of forcing his partner into prostitution.

Although he was the subject of an international arrest warrant, Troka entered the UK on a forged passport and only came into contact with British authorities a decade later, when he was convicted of common assault.

While he was being held in immigration detention awaiting deportation, British authorities discovered that he was an internationally wanted fugitive and approved Albania's extradition request.

Although Troka's first appeal against extradition was rejected, he managed to take the case all the way to the Supreme Court, which ultimately dismissed it in December 2021.

But sources for the Daily Mail have now confirmed that Troka is still in the UK, almost four years later.

With almost two decades having passed since his conviction in 2008, Albanian authorities are considering withdrawing the extradition request, increasing the possibility that he could remain in Britain permanently.

Robert Bates, director of research at the Centre for Migration Control , said: " This case shows how weak Britain's borders are. This man is clearly a public nuisance and his continued presence in our country is an affront ."

The British Home Office has refused to say whether Troka will still be extradited.

On August 2, 2024, Troka appeared for the last time at Westminster Magistrates' Court, where the judge accepted his lawyer's request for unconditional release, meaning he is free to do whatever he wants, without any restrictions.

He spent more than three years in detention, from August 2, 2018 until the Supreme Court's ruling in 2021, before being released on bail.

According to court documents obtained by the Daily Mail, Troka began a relationship with a woman in 1994, in the city of Fier.

They then traveled illegally to Athens, where Troka used physical and psychological violence to force her to work in a brothel, and then took all the earnings.

Later they moved to Rome, then to Padua, where he continued to exploit it.

He was finally arrested in Italy, on May 27, 1995, and sentenced to one year and four months in prison for exploitation and favoring prostitution, but he did not serve the entire sentence and continued to exploit his partner in 2000.

By 2007, Albanian authorities had begun searching for him, and an international arrest warrant was issued in 2008, shortly before he was sentenced in absentia.

That same year, he was caught attempting to enter the United Kingdom with a forged Bulgarian passport, according to Essex News and Investigations.

An expert on organized crime in Albania stated that it is not unusual for Albanian criminals to be involved in prostitution.

The expert, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail: “In the late 1990s, Albanians in Italy learned how street prostitution was controlled by the Italian mafia, so they started smuggling Albanian girls to Italy and Greece with false promises, then forcing them to work in prostitution – as in the case of Troka.”

“In the 2000s, they also expanded into the United Kingdom, where they dominated the red light district of Soho and opened their own brothels, often using victims from Albania and Eastern Europe.”

In 2008, photographs were published of Albanian pimps selling a woman for £3,000 outside the Selfridges department store in London.

Police surveillance footage shows a man handing over money to two compatriots outside the store, while passersby understood nothing of what was happening.

The woman, accompanied by a violent man, was forced to stay there while the deal was made. She was expected to bring her new owner up to £100,000 a year, having sex up to 25 times a day in a brothel.

In that case, the woman was lucky the police intervened and saved her, while the traffickers Agran Demarku , his brother Flamur, and a third, Izzet Fejzullahu, were sentenced to a total of 63 years in prison.

In another rare case this year, Albanian crime boss Roland Cankaj was found guilty of running a brothel in London with trafficked Brazilian women.

The 43-year-old forced women to have sex with up to 15 men a day, and was convicted after a six-day trial at Croydon Crown Court.

The investigation into the organized crime group "Vëllazëria Cankaj" began in 2022, and police discovered that they had trafficked women to the United Kingdom to exploit them in the sex industry.

During surveillance, Cankaj was filmed moving women from one address to another and taking provocative photographs of themselves to use in advertisements.

Police then raided a brothel in Tower Hamlets, where paraphernalia related to sexual activity was found.

In total, six victims were identified, including a Brazilian beautician who was lured to Britain but ended up performing up to 15 sexual acts a day, with half of the money taken from Cankaj./ DailyMail
