It seems that Albanian prisoners have become a problem for the prison capacities of European countries. Although Albania has its own problems with prison capacity, Rome is working to reach an agreement with Tirana so that Albanian prisoners in Italy can serve their sentences in their country in exchange for professional training.

This is what the head of the Department of Prison Administration, Giovanni Russo, said at the Justice Commission, as he spoke about the overcrowding of prisons in Italy.

"At a cost of €34 per day for each Albanian prisoner incarcerated in its prisons, the United Kingdom has entered into an agreement with Albania to serve its sentence in its own country. This came to our mind - explained Russo - to make the same agreement with some modifications: not to send money to Albania, but to offer penitentiary-type services".

According to him, there are currently 60,814 prisoners in Italian prisons, with an increase of about 400 more prisoners every month.

"We objectively have an increase of about 400 more prisoners every month in Italian prisons. To date we have 60,814 prisoners. Of these, 43,000 are municipalities and the rest are divided into high security and 41 bis".
