The great poet and master Jorgo Papingji passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy, over four thousand song lyrics and countless collaborations with a constellation of artists, who turned his literal poems into melodies.
In the show "Albanian Life" on RTSH, the singer Aurela Gaçe shared words of consolation for Papingji, as well as a personal story with him.
In 2011, Gaçe would grab the first prize at the RTSH Song Festival with the song "Jetoj", written by the late Papingji.
"'As much as I want to wait, when you have someone to wait for, you have a dream, you have a hope.' Just with this verse, which Jorgo Papingji wrote with music by Adrian Hila, he said it all. I was lucky that Jorgoja trusted me from my early days to sing heavy verses and I am very grateful to her.
'Where this world is going, no one knows/I don't know, you don't know either.' These are not just lyrics, they are hymns that Jorgoja wrote as he felt at that moment with the troubled soul of the poet, and they remain hits to this day. Jorgoja has written about four thousand songs, imagine! Only for me he may have written 20. But for others, how much did he leave?
Talking about Jorgo is not so simple, because you have to be in a slightly calmer moment. It made me very sad. I always talked to Jorgo. I went to meet him, I tried to get him something else, because I said 'as long as I have the opportunity to get that pollen that only he knows how to express'. Even when we had nothing to work on together, I called him, when I had a concert, I invited him and he came, as it was impossible, because he has been really sick these days. Just to express gratitude, just to express love, because it is very important to express love to someone while they are here physically. That's why I feel good that at least I didn't forget it.
I often took him on the phone even to talk in vain. He complained to me, he said 'I'm left alone now', although he had many friends. His works speak for themselves and there is no need to say how Jorgoja was. I am lucky just like every artist who managed to sing his lines, perform, every composer who was able to have Jorgo by his side. Great luck that our music had a pen like Jorgo's, because the songs sounded even more beautiful from his genius pen. I feel a little guilty that I am not there to give him the last farewell, as he deserves with our presence, but I know that he received the love from me when he was physically here," said Aurela Gaçe.
