Albania has not managed to meet the 2% of military spending, as required by the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), although the countries of the region and beyond are mobilizing to strengthen security in an increasingly unstable world.

According to the data made public by the "Balkan Defense Monitor 2024", Albania is ranked even weaker than North Macedonia for 2023, while the first place for spending on the army is led by Serbia with 2% of its GDP.

In second place is North Macedonia with 1.7%, followed by Albania with 1.6%.

However, Albania and North Macedonia are projected to overtake Serbia, which is expected to drop to third place in the region at 1.8% in 2024.

In the Balkans, no NATO ally has yet reached the 2% target, although North Macedonia and Albania are expected to do so in 2024. Meanwhile, all NATO allies, including those in the Western Balkans, are meet another requirement, that at least 20% of defense spending be used for equipment.
