Donald Lushaj expects to graduate in July of this year in the agribusiness management branch despite being sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison for cocaine trafficking. From the cells of Peqin, he attends online lectures, while the completion of his studies has remained hostage to a response from the prison directorate regarding professional practice.

Accusations of cocaine trafficking have not prevented 30-year-old Donaldo Lushaj from attending university from the Peqin prison cell where he even expects to graduate in July of this year. After his arrest in February 2018, for the trafficking of 613 kg of cocaine in the Port of Durrës, the 30-year-old has chosen to continue his higher studies even under conditions of deprivation of liberty.

He was registered as a student of the Faculty of Economics in 2012-2013, but he could not finish his studies within 3 years. He left some exams and some subjects for attendance.

During the first three years of his sentence, he sought to continue his education and on October 27, 2021, he received approval to resume studies in the agribusiness management branch at the Agricultural University in Kamez. From the prison premises where he has to suffer 10 years and 8 months of imprisonment, he followed 2 modules online via the Zoom platform and has 2 exams left.

In direct online connection while the students were attending the lectures from the school's auditoriums, Donald I was silent from the cell, just listening. One of his teachers says that he remembers Donald very well as one of the special cases where the lesson is given in unusual conditions.

"You know that we have many students sometimes and it is difficult for us to memorize, but in this case Donald was memorized because it is a special case. I think Donald has become a more diligent student now that he is in isolation than before. In my subject with the exam he gave I saw that he had studied. Got seven. No special dates were created for them. The exam was done in real time Supervised by me, but also the social worker." - said his pedagogy.

Donaldo Lushaj expects to graduate from Peqin prison where he is serving his sentence in July if he manages to fulfill all his obligations to the university. One of these obligations is the performance of professional practice. In the conditions where the 30-year-old is, the Agricultural University has suggested to the Directorate of Prisons that the young man do an internship in the Prison administration so that the young man has the opportunity to obtain the Bachelor's degree that he has been waiting a decade for.

Në rastin e Donaldit duke marr parasysh rrethanat kemi kërkuar nëpërmjet punonjësit social të burgut të Peqinit që të mundësohen rrethanat që Donaldi ta kryej praktikën profesionale tek administrata e burgjeve . Presim përgjigje nga punonjësi social I Burgut të Peqinit lidhur me këtë çështje.” – tha zv.rektori.

Pavarësisht ndjekjes së studimeve nga qelia, përgjigja e Drejtorisë së Burgjeve për kryerjen apo jo të praktikës profesionale është vendimtare për diplomimin e Donal Lushajt nga qelia.

Today in Albanian prisons there are 14 prisoners who have left their higher studies halfway. Among them, only two of them have submitted a request to continue their education.
