In Tirana, participants of the anti-communist revolt in the Spaçi prison as well as the National Union of Integration of Political Prisoners and Persecuted asked the highest authorities of the state and politics to work for national memory, condemning the communist dictatorship.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Spaç Revolt, where political prisoners protested with the national flag without the communist star.

But the participants of that protest claimed that the distancing from the dictatorship has not yet been carried out, while politics and administration have not prevented the involvement of persons who served the communist regime.

The political prisoners of Spaç and other prisons of the communist regime asked the authorities to provide a fund for the rehabilitation of the Spaç Museum, while in the capital they asked to honor the protagonists of the anti-communist revolt in one of the most brutal prisons of the Pal Zefi dictatorship, Hajri Pashaj, Dervish Bejko and Skender Daja with friends.

The surviving participants of the anti-communist revolt in Spaçi prison gathered today at the National Museum to remember their unjust suffering for politically motivated punishments as opponents of the regime.

They emphasized that in these 32 years of political pluralism, not once was enough done for the rehabilitation of political convicts, punishment and distancing from that criminal regime, while its people are still in power and hinder the de-communization of society.

"Albanians are few to be divided into opposite parties. Genocide has been perpetrated against us and our actions to oppose this genocide some groups have tried to extinguish by giving legitimacy to bandits. They even say they are Albanians, but they don't have any Albanian blood. They mutilated the corpses. They tortured the bound people. The side that has been tortured and exhausted by the communist dictatorship has produced great men who have raised the national flag high. Whenever the power is taken by the left, they are not only not respected, but often they also want to humiliate them", says Demir Pojani, former political prisoner.

The organizer of the gathering was the National Union for the Integration of Former Prisoners and the Politically Persecuted of Albania.

Spaçi was one of the most brutal prisons of the dictatorship, where political prisoners were forced for many years to work in the mine to extract minerals in inhumane conditions.

In 1973, a revolt broke out there with the cries of "Down with Communism", "Long live Free Albania", "We love Albania like all of Europe".

The protesters, although imprisoned, raised the national flag without the communist star on the eagle, which they painted themselves.

The revolt was suppressed with unprecedented violence by the dictatorship, shooting 4 of the protesters, re-sentencing 80 others, after severe torture during the investigation./VOA
