DASH: Albania at risk from cyberattacks by Iran and Russia

Albania is and remains the target of cyber attacks from countries like Iran and Russia.

This is confirmed by the US in the latest Security Report for Albania from the Foreign Security Advisory Council on behalf of the US State Department, which considers our country as one of the countries seriously at risk from cyber attacks by states such as Iran and Russia.

The report mentions recent attacks carried out by Iran against state systems or websites in Albania.

“Albania is a target for malicious cyberattacks by state actors, including Iran and Russia. Albania has also experienced ransomware attacks by cybercriminal groups. In 2026, Iran carried out cyberattacks against Albanian state websites and systems. Malicious cyberactivity by a state that intentionally damages critical infrastructure or impairs its use and functioning to provide services to the public can have domestic, regional and global effects; poses a high risk of harm to populations; and can lead to escalation and conflict,” the report states.

Regarding the level of terrorism, the report assesses Tirana mainly as a medium-level threat, although it is acknowledged that there have been no terrorist attacks in Albania over the last decade.

The latest terrorist threat mentions the Iranian regime's plot against the Mujahideen group in Albania in 2018, an attack that was prevented and the perpetrators arrested.

Meanwhile, in terms of crime, the US considers Tirana to be of medium risk, but appreciates the Albanian Government for joint efforts with the US to fight crime, improve law enforcement capabilities in the country, and reduce corruption.
