Albania received the main attention of the Italian media throughout this year. This is the conclusion of the 2024 report of the "Carta di Roma" association, which has been active for 13 years in the field of monitoring media coverage and the correctness of information disseminated by them in Italy, on immigration issues.

Albania has been in the spotlight due to the Rama-Meloni agreement signed in Rome on November 6th of last year. The implementation of the agreement has gone through a long ordeal of obstacles so far, following opposition from the opposition and the suspension of its implementation by the Italian courts.

Attention to this agreement was particularly high in September-October, when the first migrants who were denied asylum by Italy and ordered by the courts to return to the country began to be sent to the Gjadri camp.

The report, however, estimates that this year the importance of news about immigration in the Italian media has been reduced by 42%, in proportion to the decrease in their influx to this country.

According to Valerio Cataldi, the outgoing president of the “Carta di Roma” Association, 2024 has been a period in which “people disappear (again)”, while politics remains “(again) in the spotlight”. On the front pages of newspapers, coverage of migration issues has fallen by 42%. In total, the Italian press has published 4,511 headlines on migration, which represents a decrease of 34% compared to 2023. The newspaper Avvenire holds the first place with 254 front-page articles and 870 headlines in total (an average of 2.9 headlines per day, with a decrease of 17%). Evening television editions, on the other hand, have reduced the number of news stories on migration by 41%.

From 2013 to 2024, no clear link was observed between the number of boat arrivals and the production of media headlines, indicating that coverage of this topic is influenced by factors that go beyond the reality of migratory pressure. Media attention on this topic is often intermittent, with peaks of reporting during June (due to two major landings and the death of Indian worker Satnam Singh) and between September and October (in the context of the decree on flows and the implementation of the agreement with Albania).
