Italian chief prosecutors have raised the alarm about the expansion of the Albanian mafia. While reporting to the anti-mafia parliamentary commission, Rome's chief prosecutor, Francesco Lo Voi and Ilaria Calò, emphasized that Albanians are no longer apprentices of the local mafia, but have turned into international drug brokers.
"Calò explained how the Albanian mafia has made the ultimate leap in quality in the eternal city, turning from an apprentice of the local mafia to an international drug broker", reports La Repubblica.
While the chief prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi emphasized that in the investigations, links were found between pure criminals and "political" criminals.
According to him, the relationship between Roman crime and some political circles is becoming closer and closer. He also spoke about the few tools that the Rome prosecutor's office has available to fight this phenomenon.
"The Roman reality is a complex reality that is fought every day with the few weapons available to the capital's prosecutor's office, which is constantly understaffed.
The two magistrates stopped at the crucial points of the fight against big crime.
"The presence of mafia-type crime continues to be felt in the city of Rome, in the centers of the metropolitan area and in other provinces of Lazio with the characteristics of the traditional mafia, which find it easy to reinvest illegal money in money laundering activities . The most diverse forms are not only construction, but also hotels, services and logistics".
For Lo Voi, it is necessary that legislators continue to provide tools to combat such mafia phenomena that affect the economy, democracy, freedom of enterprise, market management and social relations themselves.
"In the absence of these tools, it will be difficult for us to achieve certain results", he emphasized.
