He wants to stay in prison, where he feels safe and protected. But he keeps repeating that he is the cause of Artan's death. This is what Marjan Pepa, the 52-year-old who is in prison for killing his friend, Artan Kaja, known to everyone as Toni, says. The victim was the owner of a company in Lunata, but was killed with a gunshot to the head on January 7.
Despite being in handcuffs, Pepa refuses to speak and state the reasons for his friend's murder.
"He says he is confused and does not want to answer specific questions about the murder of his compatriot," the media write.
The same sources write that Pepa has not even spoken to his lawyer about the details of the incident and the motives that led him to take that action.
Meanwhile, the court set the security measure of imprisonment for the Albanian.
Italian authorities say they have not found the gun used to kill Toni. The Carabinieri continued to search the paper factory owned by the victim and an area outside the cemetery. At this point, investigators do not rule out the possibility that Pepa gave the gun to a third person. According to them, the 52-year-old went behind the factory, through a small wall that separated it from the cemetery. This is a "blind spot" since there were no surveillance cameras. In addition to the gun, the perpetrator's mobile phone is also being searched, which could lead to new evidence for the investigation.
Most of the investigation is focusing on the relationship between the two compatriots. The two Albanians were friends. Artan Kaja took Pepa, who was recently unemployed and in financial difficulties, into his home. Kaja helped him find work as a truck driver for a company in Italy. Over time, their friendship cooled.
Apparently Pepa was jealous that his friend had become a small entrepreneur, had an important role in the community, and a beautiful family.
Last summer, there was a fight between two Albanians after some comments Pepa made about the victim's wife. A few months later, Pepa was fired from the company where he worked as a truck driver and, without work, he blamed his friend for the situation. A resentment that had long been so built up that he sought revenge.
An autopsy is expected to be performed on the body on Wednesday. It will more clearly determine the dynamics of the incident. So far, it has not been determined whether the killer shot him in the face or from behind. A detail that may be insignificant after a life was lost, but which determines the brutality of the incident, similar to that of settling scores in a criminal context, Italian media write.
