AGSH condemns attacks on journalists during protest in front of Parliament

During the protests on Thursday in front of the Parliament building in Tirana, several cases of attacks and obstructions against journalists, cameramen and photojournalists who were carrying out their duties to document the events were reported.

The incidents, according to the Albanian Journalists Association (AGSH), have included both intervention and use of force by the police, as well as acts of violence or intimidation by protesters, raising serious concerns about the safety of journalists in the field and the free exercise of their profession under protest conditions.

Attacks on media workers have come from both the State Police and protesters. According to the AGSH, some of the cases have been documented with footage, while episodes have also been recorded where protesters have used violence or obstructed media teams while performing their duties.

Based on these incidents, AGSH strongly condemns any form of violence against journalists, emphasizing that attacks on the media constitute a violation of freedom of expression and the public's right to be informed.

The organization emphasizes that journalists are not parties to the protest, but are on the ground to document the events, so their safety must be guaranteed by all parties.

AGSH calls on the Police Oversight Agency to immediately launch investigations into the possible unjustified use of force against journalists and to hold any police officers involved accountable.

It also calls on protesters to respect the work of the media and to avoid any form of intimidation or attack on journalists.

Dozens of citizens, for the second time in a row this week, have protested at the entrance to Parliament by throwing eggs at ruling Socialist Party MPs, while massive nightly protests against the government have been continuing for more than a month.
