The Foreign Minister of Albania has distributed to the media an announcement regarding the search for oil in the Ionian Sea.
Based on various information that have circulated on social networks about the violation of the Albanian maritime space, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declares that no such activity has been carried out that has violated the sovereignty or sovereign rights of Albania in the maritime spaces.
In the announcement, the Foreign Minister states that "in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is continuously monitoring any activity of an exploratory character or of any other nature that is being carried out in the maritime space between Albania and Greece, and not only for prevent any negative impact that may bring to the interests of the country".
Denying all the news and information that have come out during these days, the Foreign Ministry emphasizes that the Albanian institutions are up to the task of dealing with any situation that may affect the country's interests in the slightest.
During the last two days, the former deputy commander of the Naval Force, Artur Meçollari, is one of those who has repeatedly written that Greek oil research vessels have trespassed in the part of the Ionian Sea that is not delimited and contested by Albania and Greece. According to Meçollari, with the movements of the "Vernicos Sifnos" ship, Greece has violated the sovereign rights of Albania on its continental shelf.

Regarding the information circulated by individuals through social networks, where they claim that the interests of the Albanian state have been violated by exploratory or exploitative activities carried out by Greece in the Ionian Sea, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, based on the information of the relevant institutions, declares that no such activity has been carried out that has violated Albania's sovereignty or sovereign rights in maritime spaces. The Albanian authorities are and will be in continuous monitoring and with full responsibility of any type of activity of an exploratory character or of any other nature that is being carried out in the maritime space between Albania and Greece, and not only, to prevent any impact negative that can bring to the interests of the country.
We inform the Albanian citizens that the MEPJ is in constant communication with the respective Greek authorities to provide and exchange all the necessary information that ensures full transparency for any type of exploratory or exploitative activity that is carried out in the maritime spaces between the two countries, based on the international instruments where both states are parties. Such unverified news, which create media smoke, do nothing more than the effect of disinformation, of arousing public opinion's sensitivity to possible irresponsibility of Albanian institutions or the sale of national interests to other countries. On the contrary, the MEPJ ensures that the Albanian institutions are up to the task of dealing with any situation that may even slightly affect the interests of the country.
Meçollari said that Greek ships have been interfering in Albanian waters for about 10 days. He said that at the moment the ship is in the area between Corfu and Albania. According to him, the ship makes a certain itinerary cycle and then returns again. These ships, he says, are contracted by the Greek government and are searching for oil in the Ionian Sea.
