There are 14 candidates who have expressed their desire to take the top position in the State Police with a 5-year mandate.

Among the candidates who have applied is Pëllumb Seferi, currently Director of International Relations at the State Police.

Another candidate is the director of the Fier Police, Skënder Hitaj, who during his career has also held leadership positions in the Shkodër and Dibër regions.

The current director of the Vlora Police, Elidon Çela, who previously headed the Police Supervision Agency in Tirana and held several leadership positions in the police, has also submitted his candidacy, as has Idajet Faskaj, who has also served in several departments of the State Police.

The documentation has also been completed by the current director of the Durrës Police, Afrim Tafa.

The former director of several local directorates, Lorenc Panganika, currently at the Security Academy, has also expressed interest in leading the State Police.

Tonin Vocaj, former No. 1 of the Tirana Police, has also joined the race. Gentian Shehaj has also joined the race.

The director of the Criminal Police, Neritan Nallbati, and Aranit Vrapi have also applied.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Interior will publish the names of the candidates on its official website.

Within 10 days, a Special Commission composed of 3 people, chaired by a Deputy Minister of Interior and 2 members, the Secretary General of this department and the head of the Police Supervision Agency, conducted a preliminary assessment to verify the legal conditions.

The former director of the State Police, Ilir Proda, held this position for 17 months. He left after the February 28 protest, arguing that he failed to guarantee order and security, after opposition protesters threw Molotov cocktails at the villa of former dictator Enver Hoxha, inside which several foreign artists were found. Until the election of a new director, deputy director Sokol Bizhga has been appointed to the position.
